If you create svn mplayer with checkinstall, so you habe a deb.
In this deb is mplayer and mencoder.
sudo dpkg -i svn mplayer.deb installed mplayer and menoder.
mencoder works fine,but is not Is not registered
It was in 7.04 and now in 7.10.
It a Bug in Ubuntu.

this is not a bug, so I marked it as invalid.
synaptic, adept etc. are package-manager, they are managing packages in
ubuntu and they do not handle programs you installed by hand.
