Your problems concern the video and sound driver.

I'm a new Ubuntu user.
I have Cliff's same configuration, but with more RAM:
Computer is IBM Thinkpad T42
CPU= Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.70 Ghz
Display= ATI MOBILITY RADEON 7500 AGP (0x4C57)
Memory= 1 GBMB
