The Playback field in Preferences - Audio I/O was blanked out for me.
So I stopped jackd with:
ps -e|grep jackd
Then I restarted Audacity and could hear sound (and the Playback listed
OSS: /dev/dsp). Or

er, sorry, only four cups of coffee this mourning, what I did was this:

I had the same problem on Hardy.
Then I removed jackd sudo apt-get remove jackd was giving error so I used
synaptic. And changed Audacity playback to OSS and recording to ALSA. It works
now.

Since I didn't see it spelled out here, none of the tricks listed above

I'm having this same issue with Hardy and Audacity, but there is no OSS
option in the Playback section, only in the Recording one. Is there a
package I need to install that might have taken OSS out as an option
from Gutsy to Hardy?

Ok, I found and installed oss-compat and this provided a number of new
choices, including OSS: /dev/dsp. I selected that for playback and it
works now. However, it does seem to block all other devices from
concurrent playback. It's a reasonable workaround for now.

I have the problem with or without JACK or PulseAudio. As I said
Audacity runs under WINE here, but with a few restrictions (Can't choose
bitrate to save mp3s, for example - defaults to 128)

As someone above me said. Removing the package jackd solves the problem.
I see that I need that package for LiVES (which never worked quite as
expected for me) and for Ardour, which I don't use but for what I see in
its homepage is so much more professional than what Audacity is.
I hope this
I already tried removing jackd and I still couldn't hear any output from

Ah! Finally, a combination that works. I simply switched to OSS for

of just to the speakers, in realtime. Disabling JACK to make Audacity

[Hardy] audacity fails to playback a sound
Audacity is one of the best recorders for me, in the same page I saw some
configuration for applications that only support alsa:
http://www.pulseaudio.org/wiki/PerfectSetup#ALSAApplications
Somebody tried this?
I tried but /etc/asound.conf doesn't exist, I tried to make it manually but I'm
not
I have looked a little further and it seems that this issue is nothing
really to do with PulseAudio, in fact this is something with Audacity
itself as it is greedy for the sound system like Skype is.

Fine, what you will do with this?
I know audacity works when it's only audacity recording and playing with alsa
drivers, but if you start another application to play music at the same time,
sound on audacity crashes.
Do you know if there are some module for pulseaudio to take control of
all
I have same problem, i think this issue is because audacity doesn't have
option to play with esd driver.
