Seriously, I don't think it's an issue anymore. I changed the
installation to an Ubuntu and also tried Xubuntu. Package upgrading
and dist-upgrade seems to work fine, though not sure if system wide
upgrade (via Synaptic) would

Xubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue
for you? Can you try with latest Xubuntu release, Hardy 8.04.01, the
final release?
