I now have the system operating in the requisite manner. I found that I had the main drive patitioned with two Ubuntu 24.04 operating systems - one with the proper GUI display and the other without. I have overcome the problem by undertaking a full installation of Ubuntu 24.04. This has got it working in GUI but i am finding quite a few restrictions relating to partition sizes which, at the moment, I don't understand but am working around by using an off-line hard disc with my data on. -- Yo

I checked repositories and only have the noble ones - no third party so I cannot purge. For a time, I could not log in at all but have reconfigured the bios so that the original choices appear.
