I now have the system operating in the requisite manner. I found that I
had the main drive patitioned with two Ubuntu 24.04 operating systems -
one with the proper GUI display and the other without. I have removed
the patition with the OS without graphics and expanded the other to fill
the space. I
I have overcome the problem by undertaking a full installation of Ubuntu
24.04. This has got it working in GUI but i am finding quite a few
restrictions relating to partition sizes which, at the moment, I don't
understand but am working around by using an off-line hard disc with my
data on.

Yo
I checked repositories and only have the noble ones - no third party so
I cannot purge. For a time, I could not log in at all but have
reconfigured the bios so that the original choices appear. This way I
can check UEFI, start Windows, enter recovery mode with the requisite
screen of options but on
I wound up just purging all 3rd party PPAs (probably ffmeg and/or vulkan
were causing this).
Then I just:
sudo apt reinstall gdm3
and the GUI was back.
