similar problem on an ASUS PRO75
though i'm using kdm, the screen brightness slider hs to be touched to
restore full brightness
the screen dims to minimum when I
-boot
-close the lid
-start anysoftware using a graphic surface (mplayer , SDL)
its a brand newlaptop, first install :
acpi_osi=Linux has no effect for me either.
I use Kubuntu 8.04 on a Lenovo 3000 C200 laptop. I did a fresh install
of Hardy.
I get this dimming on every boot, at exactly the same point - somewhere
around when the hardware drives are being loaded. When the desktop is
fully loaded the brightness
Adding acpi_osi=Linux does not solve the issue for me...

Can you give me the instructions for doing so. I tried a few things in
GRUB, but none of them worked. I'm not sure if I was doing it
correctly.

Disabling acp in GRUB makes this problem fail to occur, I'm going to
reassign it.

adding acpi_osi=Linux to grub, in place of disabling the bios, also
makes the screen not dim on startup.

Yep, that's my exact problem. It seems like I remembering being able to
change the brightness before Gnome was loaded in previous versions, but
I'm not sure. Either way, the brightness dims and I'm not able to
change it until Gnome is fully loaded.

The same happens for me, it started occuring recently, I think two
kernel upgrades before 24-16, but I could be wrong. The brightness
cannot be adjusted until gnome is loaded (but that is normal right?) and
it happens at the same point during boot up every time. It's a bit
annoying.
