acpi_osi=Linux has no effect for me either. I use Kubuntu 8.04 on a Lenovo 3000 C200 laptop. I did a fresh install of Hardy. I get this dimming on every boot, at exactly the same point - somewhere around when the hardware drives are being loaded. When the desktop is fully loaded the brightness

Yep, that's my exact problem. It seems like I remembering being able to change the brightness before Gnome was loaded in previous versions, but I'm not sure. Either way, the brightness dims and I'm not able to change it until Gnome is fully loaded. -- screen dims on boot

The same happens for me, it started occuring recently, I think two kernel upgrades before 24-16, but I could be wrong. The brightness cannot be adjusted until gnome is loaded (but that is normal right?) and it happens at the same point during boot up every time. It's a bit annoying. ** Changed
