Can Berk Güder's tip worked for turning the Subtitle menu on, but still
no subtitles being loaded.
i'll try it with the no-caps-no-hyphens file and subtitle names, but i'd
still appreciate if this wouldn't be needed, as previous versions worked
fine.

That did the trick Berk, thanks.
But u don't need to open it every time using the File menu. Just
double clicking the file also works for me.

VLC loads subtitles correctly, but only if you use File Quick Open
File... or File Open File
Changing line 11 in /usr/share/applications/vlc.desktop from
Exec=vlc %U
to
Exec=vlc %F
seems to fix the problem.

Confirming. In Hardy Heron VLC doesn't load subtitles at all. Also
right-click menu doesn give you option for turning on subtitles.
