I'm closing this Won't Fix as the needed dependency is already in the
Ubuntu packages that depend on it (eg Wine). ia32-libs itself will be
going away in Lucid+1 as well in favor of multiarch.

In Wine I had to approach the problem by having the Wine package itself
depend on lib32nss-mdns -- is this the way forward for all packages?

apparently openjdk (and maybe sun-java) do need mdns in some situations;
in other situations, where you do not want to have an avahi daemon
installed on a (server) system, you do want to be able to install
openjdk without avahi. now, ia32-sun-java depends on ia32-libs, which
would make the installa
I ran into this same problem with Picasa for Linux. That package has a
dependency on ia32-libs, and worked properly with previous 64-bit Ubuntu
releases, but creating lib32nss-mdns without adding it as a dependency
to ia32-libs has broken Picasa on Hardy.
I don't understand the objection to adding
I marked #227111 - about ia32 sun java 5 and 6 - as a duplicate of this
one.

installed by default i think.

There is the same problem with Thunderbird, the 32-bit version in x86-64

libnss-mdns is currently seeded for the desktop. we can't do that for
lib32nss-mdns, because this would pull in libc6-i386. However it should
be possible to have ia32-libs installed without lib32nss-mdns.
