After having tried hypothesis the best shot is that it 's a Rhythmbox bug that
should not handle CTRL+space as a shortcut in French. (because of a specific
french typograhy exception => small unbreakable space ...)
This is very unlikely to change in Rythmbox, but I'll fill a bug there.

I have the same problem with Quod Libet and CodeBlocks.
Xev tells me that "space" key is pressed, but in these apps, everything happens
like if ctrl+space was stroke (play/pause in quod libet, completion in
codeblocks).
My xorg.conf :

I don't know for you, but if I use the "France (Legacy) Alternative", it
works until I reboot my system. After that, everything I wrote with my
keyboard gives me stuff like "æâ€êþÿûîœô" as if "Alt Gr" was always
pressed.

As far as I am concerned, changing the layout of the keyboard from
"French Alternative" to "French" solves the issue. The difference
between the layouts for the space key is that in "French Alternative",
it is "nobreakspace".
In fact, the default installation select the "French Alternative" layou

maybe it should be default configuration for French keyboard...

I fixed this bug with Keyboard layout: France Alternative
- In System => Preferences => Keyboard
- In Layout tab
- Click Layout Options
- Expand the latest option: Using space keyto input non-breakable space
character
- Select Usual space at any level
No need to restart X nor Rythmbox: it works

Can someone (with a working setup) run 'xev' in a terminal and tell me what is
the output when you press Ctrl+Space and when you press only space ?

Same as Philippe. I forgot to mention that this is the output when the search
in Rhythmbox works.
Here is the result if I switch back to the default option (but still using
"French Alternative" layout). So that Rhythmbox's search doesn't work anymore
and, as you can see, the space in Ctrl+Space
