OK. Looks like it may be an issue caused by switching resolutions.
When I checked on my wife's login, behold- trash icon works as expected.
When I logged back in to my account, I caught a glimpse of an icon before the
bottom panel loaded, VERY low on the screen, just the tip-top of the icon.
So.
the user configuration should make no difference there, could you try
using an another user on the same configuration?

I just did a fresh install on my test machine and the trash icon works fine.
The desktop system that's giving me grief was upgraded from a Gutsy install.
Something must've been botched in the upgrade process.
Is it possible an old setting is conflicting on the upgraded box?

Just to clarify, selecting and de-selecting the option to show home,
volumes, network and computer on the desktop all function as expected on
both 7.10 and 8.04. Only the trash icon visible option refuses to play
nicely in 8.04.

gconf-editor only set gconf keys, does right clicking on the desktop
show the nautilus context menu? can you create directories there and are
they displayed correctly?
