The solution was to install on an ext2 partition, that worked for me. I haven't installed Ubuntu recently so I can't tell if this is still a problem. I had this issue about a year ago and if you successfully installed on ext3 partitions then I guess it's fixed. -- GRUB fails to install in Ubuntu

Max, what exactly was the solution you found at the thread? Was it the / mount point? I can assure you I've installed grub on tons of ext3 partitions without an issue. Also, do you know if this is still an issue for you with the latest Ubuntu? Thank you for your help -- GRUB fails to install
