It seems that this only happens when the wireless internet connection is used.
But not always, that's what's so weird.
The wireless card is an onboard RT61.

running. It also happens very rarely with other things.

Me and a friend at work have the same Packard Bell MZ36 laptops. Same spec and
both of ours do the same thing as yours does.
Firefox 3 Beta 5 will lock up sometimes. Apt-get and synaptic both freeze the
system everything they try to access the web. Both are using wireless networks.
