Good news.
I upgraded a Sony Vaio VGN-A270P from 8.10 to 9.04. The problem with
the Wacom tablet had seemed to extend to general problems with the USB
interface. So, I first plugged in a USB hard drive and copied about 30
GB to it. This would have caused the OS to freeze in 8.10. However,
the
Can you confirm this issue exists with the most recent Jaunty Jackalope
9.04 release - http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-9.04-desktop . If the
issue remains in Jaunty, please test the latest upstream kernel build -
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Let us know your
results. Thanks.
The Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Beta release was most recently announced -
http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta . It contains the 2.6.27
Ubuntu kernel. It would be great if you could test and verify if this is
still an issue. The status is being set to Incomplete until we receive
further feedback. Th
Just installed the latest updates to Hardy on a Sony Vaio VGN-A270P. The
problem with USB devices continues. I have a 250G drive connected via
USB. I attempted to copy about 100G to that drive. It ran for 10 or 20
minutes then the OS locked up as it had before (e.g., pressing Caps-Lock

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:
1) If you are comfortable

Connected the Wacom tablet. The machine froze in about 10 minutes. I
killed it via the power button and rebooted. Forgot to disconnect the
tablet. Machine froze again before the Gnome desktop was completely
finished building. Killed again with the power button.

Here are the files. Here's what I've done:
1. Installed Hardy (8.04) from a CD.
2. Ran memtest for 17 hours - no errors
3. Booted Hardy
4. Connected and configured bluetooth mouse (this doesn't work great)
5. Applied all updates - rechecked and applied more - rechecked and found no
more updates
Okay. I'll reload Hardy (8.04), rerun the various tests (USB drive, USB
memory stick, USB Wacom) and attach what I can get. This will take me a
day or so.

I'm re-assigning this to the kernel package. Please attach the following:
* uname -a > uname-a.log
* cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
* dmesg > dmesg.log
* sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log
dmesg will be problematic to capture the "bug" with, but a normal boot
up might be enough to find
As you suspected, it looks like a kernel problem. I loaded a different
distribution on the laptop (Fedora 9) to see if I could get a different
behavior. No such luck, of course - being a kernel problem, the
software is pretty much the same. But I did notice that I could get the
laptop to freeze
The "Intrepid Ibex kernel" huh? Okay, I'll try to find that and see if
I can get it to work. Otherwise, I'm not sure I'd be able to find the
broken lines.
In any case, something kind of odd happened. I was looking at
Xorg.0.log and wondering why there were no Wacom entries. I reached

Since this is a regression, there is a technique for isolating the
change that "broke the camels back" so to speak. I don't recommend it
unless you're familiar with kernel builds and have some time to spare.
It's called "git-bisect" and you basi
On the freeze, caps-lock does not work. Did not try to ping the machine

Okay, I've updated the machine - it's current. I've plugged in the
Wacom tablet and let it sit for 5 hours. The machine did, indeed
freeze, but here's what I did:
The tablet did not function. `lsmod` shows a wacom module running, so
I'm assuming I don't have to rebuild the kernel to get this th
Interesting The wheel on the mouse with the Wacom tablet causes the
desktop to shift left/right. Scroll the wheel and the desktop shifts.
Anyway, here's the results of the latest. Powered up again - still have not
applied updates.
Installed openssh-server (via apt-get). System's name is
Another test mentioned by the Ubuntu X Team is whether the machine
responds to ssh or pings. If it becomes clear it's a kernel thing I'll
hand it off to the capable kernel team.

Don't know. I'll see if I can get it to freeze again and try that.

Okay. HA! I've been running the live CD trying to figure out what

In any case, this is what I've been up to. Booted from the Hardy live

Could you please attach an Xorg log of the hardy crash? It might be
named something besides /var/log/Xorg.0.log, like Xorg.20.log or
Xorg.0.log.old. They should all contain a runtime date; if you can't
determine which one is the crash just all from that day.
