I have a Sony Vaio VGN-A197VP with the same keys and the same behavior
as described above, using Jaunty. Didn't work with Intrepid and Hardy
either. Just confirming the problem is still present in the latest
Ubuntu release.

I have a VAIO A617s which is essentially the same model (looks the same)
I have updated my Gusty install to Hardy and am sad to report that the problem
remains.
The behaviour is identical to that described above.

It doesn't list the models VGN-A190 and VGN-A397XP yet. Please follow the
instructions on http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=465491 and submit your
BIOS and ACPI data, this will help
