Ok, here the latest analysis.
The terminal works perfectly except for the tiny problem that the window
is not drawn at all. So I can click in it, I can even run a command in
it!! And yes, it must have been floating, as I could drag that
undefinable piece of my screen (that was everything but
Problem resolved for me by enabling and disabling the ATI drivers. It is a
little bit strange though as no other application but dolphins terminal was
affected!!
@Thomas K: please try 1. pressing F4 for the terminal to reappear 2.
deleting dolphinrc, which you can find in ~/.kde4/share/config/
Deleting dolphinrc restores the panels to their original positions. But
if I float them again, then close and re-open dolphin, the problem
reappears. Seems they're alright as long as I leave them docked...

konsole (the KDE4 version) works fine.
I thought that my case was specifically because I'd made the window
float before. Kenobi, did you do anything to the terminal in 4.0.3?
In fact, I have the same issue with the places panel--I took it off the
left hand side to be replaced by the tree view,
Works fine here. Does konsole work for you?

I don't see a terminal (I think this is because I detached it to act as
a separate floating window while it was working, pre-update). I likewise
see an entry in the taskbar: Terminal, with the X logo. In addition,
this entry is only there when the Dolphin window is active.
Hopefully will be fixed
