have had no repeat occurrences of strange touchpad behaviour (before it
was up to several times daily).

If it is a permanent fix, then this is not a software issue, and the
best we could hope for in Ubuntu is a user-directed touchpad re-mapping
workaround. I'll see how it goes in the next couple of wee

I can confirm this behaviour on my Vaio SZ650. It is probably a
hardware issue, though it would be nice to have a software workaround
(there is one for Windows users, a joke program called sakasa mouse).
