xsane hasn't changed since before Hardy Alpha 2, so any change in functionality is not due to xsane regressions. Perhaps it would help to remove your ~/.sane directory and start with a fresh configuration. In order to further isolate configuration issues, testing can be done on an Ubuntu Live CD.

I started testing Ubuntu Hardy with the 1st beta, so its hard to know when first it worked (as far as I remember though, hardy beta did not work until the day before release on my laptops). So I am quite convinced it worked with 8.04 release. Apport does not produce a crash report, xsane simple i

1. Attached Canon FB636U using USB to machine 2. Started xsane 3. tried to aqcuire image -> xsane hangs I expected it to work like it used to work previously, slow but doing a prescan. Nothing I have reported this several times in 6.10, 7.04 and 7.10. With 8.04 it worked for the first time after
