I have this problem in Karmic, with either XP or Ubuntu as guest. I
removed the sound device from the guest (which was es1370) but the
problem remains.

KVM 1:84+dfsg-0ubuntu11 (Jaunty amd64) has similar symptoms. Once
Windows XP is booted the initial sound is heard and audio playback works
for some time.
Then, at some moment (10-15 minutes after), the audio stops working
while blocking any application that tries to access the audio. The only
I believe that this issue has been solved by kvm-84 in Jaunty. As there
has been no further activity on this bug in quite a while, I'm going to
mark it 'fix released' for now.

Hi there, thanks for the bug report.
Is there any chance that you could retest this in Jaunty? The upstream
kvm source rewrote much of the sound device interaction code and very
well may fix this.
