I'm having this same problem in karmic, on kernel 2.6.31. I can't
compile the r8101 module from realtek either. The NIC doesn't show in
ifconfig.

I have a dell mini 9 in which the wired eth worked great until a recent
intrepid update (about a week ago -- 29th Jan?), when it stopped
totally, not even any lights on the NIC in the dell (tho they show on
the switch).
On the plus side, wireless now works!!

I've just been installing the 2.6.27-10 proposed kernel along with
linux-backports-modules-2.6.27-10-generic_2.6.27-10.8lp256331apw1_amd64.deb
and it work great.

Here is the updated and probably for the near future final driver. It works well
on the most supported chipsets, some cards doesn't work with programs
manipulating the MAC address (e.g. Xen).
RealTek, the company that produce those network cards doesn't
seem eater to help

Two days ago I reported that my ethernet card was failing to work with intrepid
but, as I was about to install the patched module that captn kindly provided
here, I noticed that it suddenly started to work flawlessly.

As I know, the support for your card is scheduled for the 2.6.28 kernel
release.

try this new driver, the procedure looks more difficult than it is:
* download the attached package and (right mouse click) unpack it in

The rtl8101e and rtl8102e support in the r8169 driver is broken.
The chip is feeded with a wrong startup code.
It works with the latest 2.6.27 kernel + patch:
