I ran into this only once in the last month.
Since my first post, I have changed a lot of things. I have a more powerful PC
(much faster disk, much faster cpu). I have upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic),
and therefore updated about everything.
Nevertheless, I ran into this again recently.

Philip: There is no reason this bug should be new the reporter stated that it
only happened once in last 30 days and system has changed since than.
Marked invalid as we do not know what caused this issue and has since been gone.

I am unable to reproduce this from the steps you provide. What version
of tbird are you using? Is this our package or upstreams package. By the
looiks of the info provided it is upstream package or a deb package that
isnt offficially a Ubuntu package. Please paste the output of apt-cache
policy

I don't know how to help you reproduce without disclosing too much personal
data. I include a screenshot of such scrambled messages that I moved from my
gmail imap inbox to a local folder. I tried to compact and it didn't solve the
issue. I have migrated to
