I had some time around a hotspot today to do some testing. I was able to connect to the AP, get an IP assigned and talk to the DNS (I didn't get further than that due to time constrains and me being relatively inexperienced in terms of routing tables and whatnot, also firestarter/iptables probably

Oliver, are you talking about a 2.6.26 or a 2.6.27 kernel? With the recent update to the 2.6.27 kernel the ath5k drivers works for me (didn't work on 2.6.26) and should work for most cards AFAIK. (Not including lspci output or anything since I don't think that's particularly relevant right now)
