Wireless seems the origin of it, it seems freezes occur only when I am
using it.

@8200, I think it would be best if you opened a new bug report regarding
this issue. The reason is that you appear to use the iwl3945 driver and
the majority (including original bug reporter) use the iwlagn driver
here. Based on the feedback, it appears linux-backports-modules
resolves the issue
Ok I must take that back - maybe the kernel panics are not as frequent
as without linux-backports-modules-intrepid but they are still
happening.

Three days ago I installed linux-backports-modules-intrepid again and
now I haven't got any wlan-kernel-panics anymore.ay
But it also effected that my networkcard (Broadcom Corporation
BCM4401-B0 100Base-TX) doesn't work anymore!

I had the same problem, Dell XPS M1330, Intel 4965AGN, and switching to
Wicd seems to have solved it for me also.
I'm running Ubuntu 2.6.27-7.14-generic - logs attached (though they do
not include whatever system messages were outputted, if any, around the
time of a kernel panic).

More interesting updates in the odd category. I'm in the same hotel, and the
upstairs wireless makes my laptop freeze frequently, when the downstairs
wireless doesn't.
The network is totally unencrypted, and I don't really know what other
information I can provide.

Me too on a Dell Latitude D430, on 2.6.27-10. It never happened to me
so far, but I'm not usually on wifi. Now, that I'm on wifi all day, I
get those crashes several times a day.

@8200 and @lew are using the iwl3945 driver whereas @chielio, @Mike
Peters, and @Dr. Dabbles (the original bug reporter) are using the

I suspect the blinking Caps and Num Lock light system freeze crash was being
caused by WEP security on my 'Open' brand modem (same company as 'Billion').
Have installed the new kernel, and am now regularly losing mouse and mousepad
functionality and usb mouse, keyboard works fine. System reboots
I connect to a WPA network so its not only WEP.

Forgot to mention in my last post, I don't see any error messages in the
logs pertaining to the crashes and I haven't yet tried the linux-
backports-modules-intrepid package.
FWIW I'm using WPA2, so it doesn't appear related to wireless security.

try using grub to boot the old hardy kernal. it worked for me. either
that, or grab the old alpha 9 distro and install that and dont pdate. i
didnt have any problems with the alpha

For those of you having issues, I'd like to gather some additional
information that will be helpful. We can then at least update the bug
description to be more informative. If you can provide the following
information that would be great:
* cat /proc/version_signature
* sudo lspci
After testing it with my notebook (Acer 5610 with core duo and Intel PRO
Wireless 3945ABG) a few times I can say that the crashes are caused by wlan.
Installing linux-backports.modules-intrepid-generic didn't fix it.
When I look into the syslogs after a crash the last messages before the
restart
I can confirm that my laptop (DELL Vostro 1500 with Intel PRO/Wireless
3945ABG) freezes randomly within an uptime of about 0-20 min. I see the
blinking LEDs (caps num lock) and can't do anything except hold down
power-button and do a restart.

Can confirm the same problem on XPS M1330 after upgrading from Ubuntu

I found out that it was probably the wireless network where I was at the moment
that caused my kernel to panic.
They use a sort of Apple-router with 802.11n, and as soon as I switched to
using cabled networking, my laptop stopped freezing.

I think Alexanders theory that the wlan-card causes the kernel panic is
absolutely right.
When I use my acer via wire and disable wlan it never hangs.
I have got an Intel PRO Wireless 3945ABG wlan-card.

My acer aspire 5610 laptop also hangs random blinking numlock (I think
maybe it was capslock - but only one of them).
Is there a way to debug such an crash? I can't find anything in the
syslogs. :-/

This just started happening on my laptop as well. I have a Fujitsu
Siemens Celsius H250 laptop, and have been running Intrepid for a month
or so. I've updated the system, but the problem still occurs, and it
appears to be quite random.

I am experiencing exactly the same situation with Intrepid AMD64 on Dell
XPS M1330. From my experience, the crash seems to happen when using
applications that need rendering (my last crash was when using firefox),
although Xorg's log does not reveal anything.
