I'm seeing a similar problem when I attached my Sprint 3G phone by USB.
The crash doesn't occur until I try to connect to the internet through
the phone. The reason the applet doesn't come back is that it is the
backend (NetworkManager) not nm-applet that crashes. Here's the
backtrace. I have

submit the crash report and give us the bug id.

I just got this too.
I was already running a 3G Huawei modem in another USB port that was
happily connected to the 3G network. I plugged in my Sony Ericsson c902
(to charge it) and, like Foaming Draught above, the nm-applet
disappeared and Apport did its thing.

Binary package hint: network-manager
Intrepid Alpha 6 with all updates.
Mobile is a Samsung A411 which is reported as a Z100 and which I use as
a broadband modem with pon/poff in terminal.
