Forgot to say that modified menu.lst file saved fine and works as
expected.

First of all, you shouldn't be running gedit with sudo. You should use
gksudo instead. Do you get the same error with gksudo?

Thanks Chris for the prompt reply. First time (after a reboot) I tried gksudo
I didn't get the warning message. Second time after closing and then reopening
terminal I get the warning message (see attached).
I'm not too clear as to when I should use sudo and when gksudo. Is there a
document
