There is an error in your configuration file. The following lines
postinst_hook = usr/sbin/update-grub
postrm_hook = usr/sbin/update-grub
should be
postinst_hook = /usr/sbin/update-grub
postrm_hook = /usr/sbin/update-grub
or just
postinst_hook = update-grub
postrm_hook = update-grub

@Jean-Baptiste,
thanks for the quick answer. I can see now that the contents of the file
are obviously erroneous, but i didn't modify the file by myself and
updates worked fine before. Thats a little weird. But anyway, it works
now and thats whats important :)

package
Do you remember when this starts to occur and what could have changed
this configuration ? If a package has put a wrong change in this file it
would be interesting to find it. You could dig into the file
/var/log/apt/term.log to try to find out which package did it.

Jean-Baptiste,

Good News is, i found out that there is obviously an error in the

@kingttx : you need to install the package module-init-tools-dbgsym. The
conflicting distribution error means that there's an error in your
source.list . The easiest thing to do is to use apport to automatically report
the error.
To have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be

PLEASE could someone confirm formally when a straightforward sudo
update/sudo upgrade will be safe on a Lenovo Thinkpad R61i - without any
problems? I bought mine preinstalled - I DON'T want to have to send it

Thanks for your report.
Could you please try to reproduce the error with the following command:
sudo depmod -a
You may need to reinstall the failing kernel package the run
sudo depmod -a 2.6.24-21-generic
If it's still an issue then please try to obtain a backtrace following

Speaking as someone who is waiting at -19 until all these issues are
ironed out (why was this released to -Update before all the bugs were
ironed out I don't know)... surely this type of processing can be done
in the pre-and post-install logic?
Please could you make it easy for the rest of us who

Hello Alex,
The current report is most likely due to a corrupted system map and a
breakage in depmod, not the kernel. This system map can be corrupted for
many reasons (error during the map buid, corrupted fs, not enough space
on device, ...) but has nothing to do with the stability of 2.6.24-21
Running 'sudo depmod -a' gave the error 'Bus error'.
Running 'sudo depmod -a 2.6.24-21-generic' gave the same error, 'Bus
error'.
To be sure, I ran 'df -H' to see if I had enough space on the hard drive:

I rebooted and some of the devices on the laptop did not work as normal,
such as the Netgear WG511T wireless card. I'm supposing it was due to
the depmod failure.
I removed all 2.6.24-21 packages, which included the generic and rt
kernel meta packages as dependencies, and rebooted into a previous
