is suspend/resume related whereas this is failing during X startup. A signal

The kernels should the same for both the Ubuntu and Kubuntu flavors.
You mention the monitor shuts down. Would you still be able to ssh
into the machine? If so, it might be interesting to attach your
/var/log/Xorg.0.log file.

I have now installed the 27.8 kernel with the pci=nomsi boot option. The
standard kernel goes through the motions and then shuts the monitor down
in Kubuntu. It works in Ubuntu and with the recovery option.
The system is using the nvidia 177.80 driver and the standard kernel in
Kubuntu does not

I am not positive it will work with the latest image but will try looking at
the PCI outputs.
The kernel had no drivers for the 750a MCP board and Phenom chips as far as I
can see.

Care to try a more recent Kubuntu Intrepid release candidate image which
can be found at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-live/current/ .
If the issue still exists, can you boot without the pci=nomsi option as
well as removing the 'quiet' and 'splash' options. Would you then be
