Additional info. When system freezes, sensors-applet shows HDD temp in
the red at 120F (48.8C), CPU temp at 97F (36.1C), and GPU temp in the
red at 137F (58.3C).

Similar problems on my HP Pavilion dv6700t running Intrepid amd64. With
Hardy the system always got warm when using it on my lap (blocking
bottom air vents) but with Intrepid it overheats to the point of
freezing with a flashing CAPS LOCK indicator light. Requires a power off
and cold boot to bring
My compaq nc6000 exhibits fan problems (no cooling) since updating to
8.10. It gets unusably hot.This is probably emphasized by the ATI
drivers not working in this version.

Since I upgraded my fan stays on constantly.

returns 45 C
it stays at this temp + - a few degrees

but, in my case, its sometimes only, and the fan stays constantly on.
