I ran into this bug when upgrading Debian etch to lenny. I got around
it by commenting out the text in the stop option in the
/etc/init.d/cherokee startup script. After that things went very
smoothly. I realize this isn't a Debian list but I figured since
Ubuntu is based on Debian and Alvaro
