This seems to predate the 670-1 USN. This bug was initially reported on
Nov 12th, but the USN wasn't unembargoed and published until Nov 13th.

The only root-password changing bit I'm aware of is this:

Anthony,
I know Ubuntu uses sudo but no luck as "sudo su" doesnt function
properly either, same problem authentication failure.
I normally use just su so not having that ability is a problem aswell.

Thank you for reporting this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.
Ubuntu uses sudo instead of su. Please ensure that the command 'sudo
su' still functions properly as it does on my system.

Ditto! I took an update to 8.04 this morning and found my root password
had suddenly changed. Fortunately I was able to re-set it using sudo.
I'm pretty sure this is a patch/installation/update-type issue, as I was
successfully able to 'su root' yesterday, before the update, and haven't
made any
