Works fine in my vmware windows xp with yahoo client.

I don't think Caspar Mierau meant that u change ur proxy settings as an
administrator ...
All is meant is to change the "Pager Port" in Pidgin itself the default one is
5050, which in ur case is not working,
SO change it to one of those 20,23,25,80,119,8001,8002
(from Accounts>>Mange Accounts
Just a small thing to add:
I used to have the same problem with Pidgin 2.5.5 (Ubuntu Hardy 8.04) for some
unknown reason and when i changed the Pager port it worked well (i used 20 and
119 and both worked)

the same error.. what config should i make? its definitely a problem
with pidgin.. works fine in windows. talk inside gmail too works.

I don't think Caspar Mierau meant that u change ur proxy settings as an
administrator ...
All is meant is to change the "Pager Port" in Pidgin itself the default one is
5050, which in ur case is not working,
SO change it to one of those 20,23,25,80,119,8001,8002
(from Accounts>>Mange Accounts
Just a small thing to add:
I used to have the same problem with Pidgin 2.5.5 (Ubuntu Hardy 8.04) for some
unknown reason and when i changed the Pager port it worked well (i used 20 and
119 and both worked)

reproduce it here, but I remember clearly that I tried port 80 without any
luck.

reproduce it here, but I remember clearly that I tried port 80 without any
