@rob, is it's still an issue then remove the file
/var/lib/apt/lists/ubuntu.media.mit.edu_ubuntu_dists_jaunty_universe_binary-i386_Packages
then run:
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
This will likely fix your issue. I'm closing this report because the

I now have this problem. I got the message this morning.
I get these messages:

As this has been solved, I will close this bug report.
For your HD problem, you can boot from a livecd, and run fsck from command line
or use the Ultimate Boot CD (some googling will give you the url)

Thanks much! It seems to have worked. But upon reboot Ubuntu tried to do a
