Not related to the brightness control, but to add to my last comment,
the suspend wasn't fixed. It works more frequently I think, but 50/50
at best.

On my Inspiron 4150, I unintalled the Xorg Radeon drivers and loaded the
flrgx drivers last night. This had resulted in no luck at all in
Jaunty, but it works in Karmic.
Gains:
-I can increase/decrease brightness with appropriate dell keys!! No brightness
indicator pops up, but it works
-I can s
Well, Yes!
It works for me just after installation of karmic but now I can only use Fn +
brightness during boot.
And appart from trying other distro I don't know what else we can do.
Maybe some utilities for ati driver in repositories can help.

As per Stefan's comments, this does not work for me either using Dell
latitide C640 on Ubuntu 9.10. It has been this way for so long I have
given up all hope of it being rectified...
Is anybody even working on this bug?

I upgraded to 9.10, and then after did a fresh install of 9.10, and
still no brightness control. I can adjust brightness during the boot
sequence, so its not faulty keys or anything.

Just chiming in that it used to work on my laptop, too, but has been
broken for the last couple of releases. Also, suspend/resume stopped
working over three years ago:

Same problem here since 8.04.
It all worked well for me on Kubuntu till 7.10.
Updated to 8.04 and later on to 8.10, but the problem didn't resolve.
Now i'm on Xubuntu 9.04 and the problem still exists.

I have this same issue. I'm on a Dell Inspiron 4150 w/ Mobile Radeon
7500. No effect at all with the fn+up fn+dn to change brightness. I
also notice that if I start on battery, it starts dim, but when I plug
in , it doesn't brighten. When I plug in and unplug, the brightness

Brightness can be changed OK in BIOS, and whilst the usplash Ubuntu logo

I have this same laptop Dell C640, running intrepid with ati driver.
Graphic card is ati radeon mobile 7500
I've noticed that the Fn key function for brightness and contrast work
fine while in grub or while ubuntu is loading. Then it has no effect
after gdm started and in gnome.
