This might be a silly question, so forgive me if you already thought of this, but do you have gnome-panel configured to show the Notification Area applet? Pidgin might not show the Buddy List by default, but be starting into it's notification mode. Please let me know if this makes sense, and agai

Thanks for reporting a bug. Your bugreport is missing a package version. For developers knowing a version of package is a must to have, before they can begin working with a bug.
