This doesn't seem to have been an issue with video drivers for me - I am
using nvidia video card and my drivers are up-to-date. I still see the
exact same behavior with the latest intrepid.
I had setup Karmic alpha on my other desktop and I just checked today to
see if the same issue happens there

OK. I upgraded my drivers as available in
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/intel-gfx-testing/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/intel-gfx-testing/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main
(Just Mark all for upgrade / Apply in SYnaptic.)

Maybe this has nothing to do with authentication after all. Maybe it is
just a video issue. I have Intel 82Q35 and Acer AL1916 monitor and no
xorg.conf at the moment. Interesting is, that the only video question
that xerver-xorg reconfiguration asks is about frame buffer. If I choose

My virtual consoles don't work. I press ctl-alt-F1, screen blackens but
stays in X (mouse cursor visible) , whole machine hangs, ctl-alt-F7 does
not return to my session, even ctl-alt-del does nothing. And I get this
in auth.log:

I looked at this a bit more today and indeed, the auth.log messages
don't seem to be related to this issue.
The behavior I observe is that when I select 'Guest Session', the screen
properly switches to vt9 but soon displays the error message
'authentication failed'. The background is all black, an

Indeed it is very serious to have a system systematically freeze on login from
the installation.
But these auth.log error message have nothing to do with it: I realise
that I have just the same auth.log on my regular machine working
perfectly. My problem
This is not a guest only issue.
I have the same problem with the main user in a fresh installation (8.10
from Alternate CD, nothing special). I thought I had made a mistake,
maybe in my own partitioning scheme. Thus the third time I let the
installer take the whole disk (/ and swap). The result wa
