Right on, /dev/sda10 had a bootable copy of the same .iso as the
physical CD did. The bootable copy is used as a quick test to see if
it's going to run before taking the time to burn a CD/RW for my other
Colin, yes, /dev/sda10 was a bootable live cd image.
This is based on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Information/FromLinux
which was designed to be able to boot from a hard disk partition and
then install.

device the boot was started from.

Can you tell me about the contents of /dev/sda10? It appears that that
is the device that's actually mounted on /cdrom (or at least that is my
best guess). Did you write a CD image directly to that partition at some
point?

Here's /var/log/partman /var/log/syslog as requested successively.
Do note, this is jaunty 20090116.
When booting up, desktop appeared, and got the window a volume with
software packages has been detected which of course is the cdrom I was
booting from? Could the problem be in mount somewhere?
syslog from same incident.
By the way, this is from a Compaq Presario 3.33 gHz Celeron. Launchpad
bug was from my ThinkCentre A30 2 gHz Celeron.

Just tried jaunty Alpha 3 Xubuntu CD Live. Same problem, can't commit
to changes to the partition table since /cdrom is mounted.
jaunty Alpha 3 Xubuntu Alternate did not have the problem.
Let me reproduce to get the requested log files.
