I don't know what happen, but if I upgraded my Jaunty system, the Orca
screen reader is not speaks.
When I get the login prompt, the login signal I hear, and after writing
username and password, the success login sound is good playing (little
waves and not constant volume the sound).

@David -- yes clearly espeak should be using ALSA directly and that
should be changed whatever happens. However the main issue here is that
the OSS modules no longer get loaded, which seems to have changed from
Intrepid to Jaunty. That latter needs

the the blind and partially-sighted as orca/espeak does not function and
they are not in a position to fix it without sighted help.

Espeak needs OSS and this is not loaded automatically, and sorting that
out needs manual steps not trivial for regular user. Even less so for
the sight-impared. Everything is good once those modules are loaded?

If I downloading these modules, Orca and Espeak speaks correct my two
machines, but another user writing this letter with Orca mailing list
yesterday:
I tested alpha 3 too a few days ago.
i had no sound too. no system or other sounds.
tried it on a computer with a sb live 5.1 player sound card and
Andy, espeak uses portaudio and portaudio has an ALSA backend, with or
without the pulseaudio patch (see bug #178895 for more info). Perhaps it
would be a good idea to recompile espeak to use ALSA instead?

When manualy loading snd-mixer-oss and snd-pcm-oss modules, Espeak is
speaks correct and the sound is working.

Trying Jaunty Alpha3 32 bit version with my Toshiba Satellite Pro L300
notebook.
The problem is present, the sound is not work.
After trying the test, the following lists looking in Hardy, because it
