I have found the distortion (at least on my system) is exacerbated by
loud sounds. High-bass music or loud sequences in video (gun-shots,
dramatic music, etc).
I've also found that each time it distorts, the sync with the video is
lost, like there's a growing latency as the video plays.
Very pecu
The distortion still isn't limited to system sounds. It affects anything
using pulse.

Yes. I reinstalled Jaunty's libcanberra packages along with the
pulseaudio and alsa-libs update and the problem seem resolved.

To report that I am experiencing static like clicks in the audio when no
audio is being played as well. This problem does not exist on other
OS's.

I can confirm that the patch from libcanberra clears the distortion.
Clean install of Jaunty 64 (A4), testing ext4, and immediate
crackling/distortion when enabling the event sound. Installed the patch
log out/ / in, the distortion is gone. This should be be commit should
be cherry oicked if ther
Yes, no audio after today's pulseaudio updates. Read the forums and
alsamixer -Dhw
did it for me.
lots of volume settings at zero. Set them all at max.

Disable the GNOME-Login-Sound from session for now, log out, log in.
Sounds will be restored, but you will get the distortion issue listed
above. The patch fixes both issues. However, the volume is extremely
low when running /usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="desktop-login"

I did the updates to libcanberra11 and got login sounds for the first
time in Jaunty, I have been unable to get sounds to work in any other
application. Running 64 bit Jaunty updated from intrepid.
