i got a very funny workaround to boot on 2.6.27-11.
boot using recovery mode... restart x-server... resume boot. hope this
works for you.

I have the same problem. Same laptop, same network card, Ubuntu 8.10. I
tend to do upgrades immediately, yesterday morning networking wouldn't
work, apparently because of upgrades I did on Wednesday. Turns out to be
the kernel upgrade, if I start the computer with kernel ...27-7 al is
