"xrandr --verbose" on its own should give more output. Please attach the
output both from when it is fine and when it is bad.

Turning back to 96dpi does not seem to alter the display.
Here is xrandr output when the 2 screens are already working properly:
$ xrandr --verbose --output TMDS-1 --auto --output LVDS --auto --below TMDS-1
crtc 0:1680x1050 59.9 +0+0 "TMDS-1"
crtc 1: 1280x800 59.9 +0+1050 "LVDS"
after

It looks like the native resolution of your laptop is 1280x800 and the
external monitor 1680x1050. Can you confirm this?
However, they both come up in 1024x768 which will look ugly:

Here is the new Xorg.0.log.
I would like to add that sometimes, some characters still appear
unreadable even with 'subpixel smoothing' and 98dpi.

Thanks for your report. You are right, this should work out of the box.
Looking at the xrandr edid data for LVDS, it looks a bit funny but I am
not sure what is going on.

It seems I fixed the bug by going to the fonts tab of 'appearance
preferences' dialog, changing the font resolution to 98 dpi (in the
'details') and selecting the 'subpixel smoothing (LCDs)' option.
However, I think the bug should not be closed because the default
configuration should have been
