Hello world,
I opened the case; saw the card was seated correctly, and closed the
case. Now it works! The card didn't seem unseated, but it's fine now!

The tail of dmesg shows eth0 coming up -- this is the wired ethernet
port plugged into my Mac running internet sharing. It's a bit of a
kludge, but it's the only way to get the Ubuntu box online without the
wireless card.
