I installed the nvidia 180 driver again, this time using envyng
(previously used nvidia's package) and had a different outcome - bug

I am seeing this with mythbuntu 8.10 (updates current).
Turning off usplash does not fix it.

Remember, unlike Bug #317775, I don't see a flashing white cursor.
USplash just freezes, and then it's impossible to do anything but switch
gettys.

Doing what you said, Chris, I've managed to boot without any problems.
This must mean it's a problem with usplash, and should be fixed.
