I am now running Ubuntu 9.4 with driver 96.43.10, and I now have Compiz
working. I used the NVIDIA X server settings application but had to add
the following to the xorg.conf file by hand, by executing:
sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --composite

but with "extra" visual effects (i.e. Compiz enabled) there are still no window

I know that Intrepid still hsa 96.43.09, but bug 294076 identifies some
fixes users are using to work around the issues in Intrepid. It's worth
reviewing whether these same fixes will cure your problem. Especially
see daveh's fix regarding OO.o menus.
