The problem isn't related to certain USB devices. We were also able to
reproduce the problem with other usb devices! So I deleted this part
from the problem description.

I also tested our hardware with a different test system (an AMD dual core
system)
-- All the errors disappeared!!!
In the attachement, you will find the output of dmesg, when the system
hangs at usbhid: v2.6:USB HID core driver. (I removed the custom
keyboard trackball)

I tried the following boot parameters ( combinations) with kernel 2.6.27-7:
nosmp
hpet=disable
hpet=disable highres=off
noapic
pci=routeirq
pci=noacpi
pci=off
nosmp hpet=disable highres=off noapic nolapic
nothing helped :-(
