I have done a regression test, and the last release that works fine is 6.12.4.
From 6.12.191 up, xorg log produces the aforementioned PLL error.
But let me explain further:
I was trying to upgrade "only" because with X700 at full clock, this laptop's
fan is spinning almost all the time, even when
I am having the same problem ("Couldn't find valid PLL dividers").
I run Acer TM4600 laptop with Ati Mobility X700,Xubuntu 9.04, kernel 2.6.28-18.
Tried all versions from 6.12.192 up to 6.13.0.

No, I did not say Alpha-6. Please update and check. If you still see PLL
errors, attach your log.

If you update the driver running the live CD, you must restart X
afterwards. The simplest way is to log out and in again. You can also
switch to a virtual console with ctrl-alt-F1, then run "sudo
/etc/init.d/gdm stop" to stop X. Then you can edit /etc/xorg.conf if
needed or whatever, and run X with
Sorry for responding so late, I was away for some time.
I have installed 6.11.0.99+git20090311.945ccbbd version, but "grep
commit /var/log/Xorg.0.log" doesn't return anything.
This might be because I do all that from the LiveCD. I have attached

Well these logs show that the PLL issue is solved and you now have a completely
different issue:
[1.891210] (EE) RADEON(0): Idle timed out, resetting engine...
Please file a new bug, it has a good chance to get fixed if we can provide the
right debug information to the upstream developers.

I just checked again and the debs were there. I downloaded and
installed the debs. I added "ati" to xorg.conf. I rebooted again to

I think I got the install correct. It looks like the commit ID is in

I am not sure what tarball you try to install, but please have a second
look in the PPA. Maybe you checked before the binaries were published?
If the builds are not done yet, there are small icons saying they are
waiting to be built or are being built. But there is also some minutes

I don't see a 20090311.945ccbbd for jaunty and I cannot get the tar file
installed. The ./configure command won't work for me.
Do you have a deb file for that package, or maybe you can tell me what I
am doing wrong with the tarball?
Thanks.

Tormod - I just downloaded the most current versions. Assuming I am
