In Jaunty (9.04), we have just updated to the latest
nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 package from nVidia, version 180.44.
This package provides fixes for a large number of bugs, and we need your
assistance in testing if it fixes the issue you reported.
To do this,

Over the weekend, the updated nvidia driver was updated to 180.37, this
appears to have fixed this issue. I don't think I ever really figured
out what caused X to soft freeze, but it's gone now. Do I close this
bug, or does it need to be done by a dev?

The crash is in the video driver's OpenGL implementation, there's not
much we can do about it from KDE.

kwin unresponsive using nvidia driver
I'm not familiar enough with apport and how it gathers information for
this submission. The OpenGL crash might have been my own doing. When
Kwin is hung, there are a few things I can do, for instance, I can do
Alt-F2 and try to run applications. This is mostly useless since nothing
launches, but
I tried downgrading to the 1.5.99.902-0ubuntu5~andersk1_amd64 version
and still had the same problem. Then, I downloaded the source to the
current xserver-xorg-core and it seems like the 158_maxclients patch is
no longer applied so apparently that has nothing to do with the current
problem.
