Title:
Metacity doesn't start in Jaunty

This thread indirectly solved my problem which was that after
uninstalling wine I also lost metacity and had the pain of having to
manually start it each boot. I had looked at gconf-editor before but the
key value of wm-gnome seemed reasonable for the window manager so I
passed. After reading your
Using:
sudo ln -s /usr/bin/compiz /usr/bin/compiz.real
solved the problem for me a well.

Same problem after upgrading to 9.10:
cat .xsession-errors
/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
Setting IM through im-switch for locale=en_US.
Start IM through /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/all_ALL linked to
/etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/default.
GNOME_KEYRING_CONTROL=/tmp/keyring-Cvn9UR
Changing compiz to metacity in
/desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager gives the same
error above.
Solved for me (starts compiz correctly) with :
ln -s /usr/bin/compiz /usr/bin/compiz.real

I have the same problem. I updated my system from ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10.
And I change the visualization effect to normal. For some reason it
crashed and I had the same windows without decoration and title bar as
Fabio. I can type metacity in a terminal then everything becomes normal.
But if I close
Yes, it is the default manager:
fa...@fabio-laptop:~ $ gconftool-2 -g
/desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager
metacity
Having added metacity to startup session, it is working now.

thanks for the report, are you sure you're using metacity as the default
manager? could you paste the output of gconftool-2 -g
/desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager ; may you also
add the ~/.xsession-errors file to the report? thanks.
** Changed in: metacity (Ubuntu)
I had to add /usr/bin/metacity in gnome-session-properties, as a
workaround
