I am also getting this bug.
I have karmic and the latest driver packages as I have added
https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/drivers-only to my repository.
Sometimes my monitor just turns off while booting up, then I have to restart.
I never tried xfix considering that I don't have any xo

Next time you get a black screen, after restart please attach your
/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old
Most probably it does not help to run "xfix", just leave the recovery
mode and it will be the same. xfix will only reset your xorg.conf if it
has been modified it, which you have not.

See,Some times there is no problem(i mean ubuntu runs normal,no blank

1)
