Both ways, I tried upgraded and fresh install. I am going to be
installing Karmic RC on the Toshiba as soon as it comes out, I'm running
Karmic on my Studio 1737, volume starts at about 30% on the bar, takes
me about three pushes of the "up volume" to get anything (and it's
faint), then the volume

I just got a new system and am having the same problems with it (Dell
Studio 1735), I get 0 volume until about half way up.
Also, I am having the same issue with screen brightness accept that it
goes "fully dim" by about half way down in the bar and then if I
continue to go down it doesn't go any
