I'm using an ExpressCard eSATA adapter with a Dell XPS M1710 laptop running Lucid 64-bit, but it wasn't detecting it when I plugged it in-- no activity in dmesg at all. modprobe'ing acpiphp as mentioned here fixed the problem

Hold on a sec - the HD would be a separate problem, but your problem seems to be hotplugging the card. Was the card plugged in when the computer was booting?
