This was so long ago that I don´t remember the situation, or even the post.
I can tell you that I have been running Ubuntu with my NVIDIA card for quite
a while with no trouble whatsoever. But I´m not really sure how I got it to
work. Sorry about that.

For the GeForce FX 5200 you should use the 173 driver, not the 96
driver. Please install the version 173 driver, reboot, and then attach
/var/log/Xorg.0.log and /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
